A message from the Director of Operations, Alison Taylor

Alison Taylor

Happy Christmas and warmest wishes for the New Year from all of the staff at Turn2us!

I'd like to take this opportunity in our 120th year to thank you so very much for all of your volunteering efforts. Whether you visit many people or just a few, we know from the feedback that the time you give is hugely appreciated.

Lots of people tell us that they look forward to seeing a familiar, friendly face from Turn2us. We really value your dedication and I know how passionate you are about your volunteering. I hope that you will continue to enjoy being one of our trusted volunteers and support our work in 2018.

At this time of year, more than any other, our thoughts are with those individuals and families who are struggling with money. At Turn2us, we know that anyone can find themselves in this position. So, in April, we launched the Turn2us Response Fund, the first new fund that the charity has set up for over 120 years.

The Turn2us Response Fund helps people when they need it most – when they are coping with a life-changing event, such as bereavement, job loss, ill health and disability. The first grant was awarded to grandparents whose only daughter had died within months of being diagnosed with cancer, leaving two school aged children in their care.

In June the charity responded quickly to the devastation caused by the Grenfell Tower fire. We worked with the local emergency centres to provide direct grants to those affected within days of the fire. In total, over a quarter of a million pounds in grants were provided through the Turn2us Response Fund to former Grenfell Tower residents and residents in the surrounding area who had been displaced by the fire.

The tragedy has been life changing for the community and for many the emotional effects may last a lifetime. We cannot change the circumstances for anyone involved but our response hopefully offered some immediate financial assistance to enable people to feel supported at such a traumatic time.

We have seen an exponential growth in the number of people using Turn2us services – over five million people in the last year, which is 40% higher than the previous year. Meanwhile, our grants are continuing to help people struggling with money - last year, we gave over £3 million to over 3,000 people.

In 2018, with your help, we want to help even more people in even better ways.

Wishing you all the best for the year ahead.
