Discretionary Assistance Fund - What is the Discretionary Assistance Fund?

The Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF) provides urgent grants to people in Wales as a last resort, and can include awards for certain electrical white goods, such as fridges and cookers, in addition to household items such as beds, bedding, curtains and kitchen items. Grants do not need to be paid back.

What is the Discretionary Assistance Fund?

The Discretionary Assistance Fund is only available in Wales. It pays grants that don't have to be paid back. 

There are two types of assistance available from the fund:

  • The Individual Assistance Payment, which helps vulnerable people live independently in the community; and
  • The Emergency Assistance Payment, which helps people who are in financial need because they have experienced an emergency or a disaster.
